Research in Treatment Effectiveness in Depression
UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute

If you've found this page, you have probably either seen the reports on network television featuring interviews with Dr. Andrew Leuchter (seen at right), or Dr. Ian Cook (below at left), heard about our work on the radio, or read articles about it in the press or on the internet. These reports have described the work of the QEEG Laboratory at UCLA, and some have also interviewed people who participated in our depression research program.

Drs. Cook and Leuchter lead a team conducting research into the patterns of brain activity that are associated with mood disorders, and particularly how certain patterns of activity may be associated with response to specific antidepressant medications. One of our recent papers describes patterns of brain activity that are characteristic of people who are responding to a placebo, rather than an antidepressant medication. The scope of our investigations is expanding to include work about the brain's response to medications for migraines and other pain syndromes. Some of our work on this has been published already, and many important questions remain to be answered.
