The Quantitative EEG Laboratory (QEEG Lab) at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute & Hospital has programs centered on the study of brain physiology in neuropsychiatric disorders. The Lab provides EEG and QEEG clinical services to the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, and is the home to a series of research programs based at the Neuropsychiatric Institute. These functions are mutually reinforcing in improving our understanding of brain physiology in mental illnesses and in advancing diagnostic tests that aid in the management of these disorders.

Clinical Services
Waking, wake-sleep, and brain mapping clinical studies are performed at the laboratory on a routine basis for adult and geriatric patients. These services are provided both for inpatients and outpatients. (for scheduling, please call (310) 825-3434; a completed requisition from the physician ordering the test will be necessary).

Research Programs
Research programs have focused on changes

  • in brain function and structure in normal aging,
  • in the presence of illnesses affecting memory and cognition (such as Alzheimer's Disease),
  • in mood disorders (such as depression and manic-depression),
  • in anxiety disorders,
  • in substance abuse and addiction, and
  • in basic neurobiology related to the EEG.
Our current research programs and scientific publications are described online at these links.

Educational materials about the EEG are available to members of the NPI community.

The NPI/H QEEG Lab was founded by and is directed by Andrew F. Leuchter, M.D. (afl@ucla.edu), Daniel X. Freedman Professor and Vice Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences, UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute and Hospital.

The Laboratory is located on the third floor of the Neuropsychiatric Institute & Hospital Building. Our collaborative research activities occur both in the NPI&H building, in the General Clinical Research Center at the UCLA Center for Health Sciences, and at the West Los Angeles Veterans Administration Medical Center.
